South Korea, US and Japan reaffirm goal of North Korea denuclearization

The foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States and Japan met in Atlanta on the sidelines of a Group of 20 meeting.

They reaffirmed their commitment to North Korea’s complete denuclearization and to enforcing United Nations Security Council resolutions.

North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs are a focus of sanctions, and the ministers called for sanctions to be enforced.

They agreed to keep a strong deterrence posture while seeking peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said his country would help efforts to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula and resume talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

The ministers also signed a pact for Arctic and Pacific cooperation, including plans to work together on maritime safety and emergency response.
