Junior Caminero trade shows how Tampa Bay found a star

The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians are set to meet in the American League Championship Series.

One link between the teams is Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, who signed with Cleveland as an amateur in 2019.

In November 2021, Cleveland traded him to Tampa Bay for pitcher Tobias Myers.

Caminero was then 18 and playing in the Dominican Summer League, while Myers had reached Triple-A.

The Rays saw promise in Caminero, who later became a top prospect and a star; Myers never pitched for Cleveland and was eventually traded to San Francisco.

Cleveland’s baseball operations president later called the deal a bad trade.

The case shows how difficult it is to judge young players and how one trade can change a player’s path.

The teams are now meeting in the ALCS, where Caminero is among Tampa Bay’s key players.
