Wild boars form protective barriers around piglets during wolf encounter

A camera trap at San Rossore in Tuscany recorded four wolves approaching wild boar piglets on May 11, 2026.

The adult females changed formation to protect the young, rather than simply fleeing.

The matriarch confronted the leading wolf while the other females formed moving, semicircular and triangular barriers around the piglets.

They repeated these coordinated movements during the encounter.

Researchers say this is the first video documentation of wild boars using this kind of defensive formation against wolves.

The footage became the subject of a study in Current Zoology, published on November 2, 2026.

The work may help researchers understand how prey animals respond to predators and how social behaviour supports survival; the sources do not describe any further steps.
