Michael Douglas says casting dispute over film role strained ties with father

Michael Douglas says his father, Kirk, hoped to play the lead in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The film’s financier and director thought Kirk was too old for the role, and Jack Nicholson was cast instead.

Michael says telling his father the news caused a serious rift between them.

He also says he did not thank Kirk when the film won Best Picture at the Oscars.
