Russell Brand’s lawyer says documentary influenced accusers
Russell Brand’s defense lawyer told a London jury that a 2023 Channel 4 documentary influenced women who later accused Brand of sexual offenses.
Brand faces seven charges involving six women, including rape, sexual assault and attempted indecent assault, and denies them all.
His lawyer argued that the women came forward after seeing the documentary and that its coverage made the trial unfair.
The allegations concern events from about two decades ago, according to the defense argument.
The prosecution has disputed the idea that the documentary caused the women to make their allegations, saying it was not a “magic force.”
The defense also said the delay in bringing the case was unfair to Brand.
The jury is due to consider its verdict after the closing arguments.
Russell Brand’s defence lawyer told jurors that a 2023 Channel 4 documentary and related reporting influenced the six women who brought allegations against him.
Ian Winter KC said the coverage “poisoned the well of justice” and made the case unfair.
Brand denies three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The allegations concern six women and incidents said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009.
The prosecution disputes the defence’s account and says the women’s allegations should be heard by the jury.
