B12 shots may help with fatigue only when levels are low

Med spas promote B12 shots as a quick energy boost, but extra vitamin B12 is unlikely to help people who already have enough.

B12 helps the body make red blood cells and DNA and keeps nerves working; a deficiency can cause fatigue and other health problems.

About 4% of US adults have low B12 levels, and the risk is higher for people over 60, vegans and some people with digestive conditions or certain long-term medication use.

Treating a deficiency can restore energy, but taking more B12 does not appear to boost energy or athletic performance when levels are adequate.

Some people may feel better after a shot because of a placebo effect, while spas can sell shots for much more than they cost.

Fatigue can have causes beyond B12, including poor sleep, low thyroid hormone and low iron.
