French economy contracts 0.1% in third quarter

France’s economy contracted by 0.1% in the third quarter, according to the national statistics office, Insee.

The fall followed a 0.2% contraction in the first quarter and no growth in the second.

Household spending rose, but investment fell and foreign trade weighed on growth.

Inflation also accelerated to 3.4% in October, its fastest rate since January 2024.

Finance Minister Roland Lescure said the economy was at a standstill and warned that France needs a budget to reduce its deficit.

The weakness could make it harder for the government to meet its growth forecast for the year, while concerns about debt and deficits have pushed up government borrowing costs.

Insee is due to publish revised second-quarter figures at the end of November, which could show whether France has had two consecutive quarters of decline, a common definition of recession.
