Hugo Sánchez says Ballon d’Or exclusion was discriminatory and unfair

Hugo Sánchez says he was unfairly overlooked for the Ballon d’Or in the late 1980s.

The former Mexican striker raised the complaint in an interview reflecting on his career, including his time in Spain.

He joined Atlético Madrid in 1981, then moved to Real Madrid in 1985 and won five straight league titles with the club.

Sánchez was also a prolific scorer, winning the European Golden Boot in 1990.

He said his first months at Atlético were difficult because he struggled for playing time and faced insults from some away fans.

Mental preparation helped him turn that pressure into motivation, he said, and he learned those techniques at Mexico’s Pumas.

The interview does not say whether any action on his Ballon d’Or complaint is expected.
