Spain seeks €446 million in scholarship repayments over eight years
Spain’s Education Ministry has demanded €446.2 million in scholarship repayments for the eight academic years from 2018/2019 to 2025/2026.
The demands cover public grants for university and other post-secondary studies, and include €33.6 million linked to foreign students.
Moroccan students have the largest amount claimed, at nearly €7.9 million, followed by Romanian students at about €5.9 million.
The most common reason for repayment is leaving a course before completing it, and study interruptions account for about nine in ten recorded reasons.
The amounts are sums the government has asked students to repay, not confirmed payments received.
The ministry has not said how much it has recovered, so the total ultimately returned remains unclear.
