Madrid court orders investigation into complaint against Vito Quiles
A Madrid appeals court has reopened Begoña Gómez’s complaint against Vito Quiles, after a lower court had closed the case.
Gómez, the wife of Spain’s prime minister, said the incident happened on April 29 at a restaurant.
The court says video does not establish some alleged physical contact, including that Quiles shoved or blocked her, but that this does not settle the case.
It says Quiles went directly to Gómez while she was seated with others, and she later left the restaurant as her security team responded.
The judges say investigators should examine whether his actions limited Gómez’s freedom to act or pressured her to do something against her wishes.
The decision does not find Quiles guilty or establish that a crime occurred; the court says it is too early to rule that out.
The case now returns to the lower court, which will continue the investigation and assess whether the conduct could have criminal consequences.
The Madrid Provincial Court has ordered an investigation into Begoña Gómez’s complaint against Vito Quiles over an incident at a restaurant in Las Rozas.
The court overturned a lower court’s decision to provisionally close the case.
It said it was premature to rule out possible coercion without examining whether Quiles’s conduct may have limited Gómez’s freedom to act.
Gómez says Quiles approached her at the restaurant, questioned and filmed her aggressively, and prevented her from leaving.
The ruling does not establish that a crime was committed or that Quiles is guilty.
