Heavy rains fuel a major mosquito surge across southern Gard

Mosquitoes have surged across southern Gard and the Camargue, including in Arles, Aigues-Mortes and Nîmes.

Heavy rain and mild temperatures helped mosquito larvae hatch in wetland areas from late September.

The public mosquito-control agency treated more than 2,000 hectares, using aerial and ground methods to target larvae.

The treatments did not stop every mosquito from emerging; the agency said some larvae escaped treatment or developed quickly.

Residents have reported swarms and many bites, and a nature reserve near Vauvert has closed until further notice.

The current peak is expected to ease as adult mosquitoes disperse and die, but more rain could cause new hatches.
