China launches platform to test weather satellite algorithms for operational use
China launched a platform to test weather satellite algorithms at the 2026 Fengyun Satellite Users Conference on October 29.
The platform, built by the National Satellite Meteorological Center, is designed to help move research algorithms into routine weather services.
New algorithms can show promise in research but need engineering work, trials and safety checks before they can be used reliably.
The platform supports data from more than 20 Fengyun satellite instruments and includes more than 10 evaluation methods.
Since trial operations began, it has tested more than 30 algorithms and helped more than 10 products enter operational use.
A tested land-surface temperature product has supported heat services in the Sichuan Basin during the rainy season, while water vapour and rainfall products have helped assess typhoon impacts.
The platform is open to users, who can apply, upload and adjust algorithms before full testing.
