Volkswagen recalls nearly 72,700 electric cars over battery defects
Volkswagen is recalling nearly 72,700 electric cars worldwide because some battery cells may have production defects.
The affected vehicles are mainly ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID.
Buzz models built from 2022 to 2025, along with Cupra Born cars built from 2022 to 2024.
In rare cases, faulty cells could overheat and cause a fire, though authorities said no injuries or property damage had been reported at the time.
Until their batteries are inspected, owners are being told to charge to no more than 80%.
In the United States, the recall covers 22,524 ID.4s from model years 2023 to 2026, and Volkswagen plans to set an 80% charging limit remotely for owners who do not decline it by October 21.
Dealers must inspect the affected batteries, and the charging limit can be lifted once a battery is judged safe.
Volkswagen is still working on a fix; it may involve a software update, and owners will be sent further information.
Volkswagen is recalling nearly 72,700 electric vehicles worldwide because some high-voltage battery cells may be defective.
The recalls cover about 10,000 vehicles in Germany, including VW ID. models and the Cupra Born.
In rare cases, the battery problem could cause increased heat and, in the worst case, a fire.
Owners are being told to charge affected vehicles to no more than 80% until their batteries are checked.
The company says affected batteries may not need replacement, and a software update could be sufficient.
