PAN senators propose emergency protocol for Mexicans abroad
PAN senators proposed a new emergency protocol to help Mexicans facing danger abroad.
It would cover people affected by armed conflict, political crises, natural disasters, arbitrary detention, kidnapping or serious rights violations.
The proposal would amend Mexico’s Foreign Service Law and give the Foreign Ministry a coordinating role in diplomatic, legal and logistical assistance.
It calls for the protocol to begin operating within the first 24 hours of an extreme emergency.
Senators said Mexico’s response to the conflict in the Middle East showed a need for clearer procedures, although no harm to Mexican citizens there had been reported.
The ministry would also have to report to the Senate within 48 hours of activating the protocol.
The proposal is now being reviewed by Senate committees and has not yet been approved.
