Greek and Israeli navies test missiles as submarine sinks retired frigate

Greek and Israeli naval forces held weapons trials in the northern Cretan Sea on October 21.

The Greek Navy tested Israeli-made SPIKE NLOS and SPIKE ER2 guided missiles from a patrol vessel and a special operations craft.

A Greek submarine sank the retired frigate HS MPOUMPOULINA with a torpedo during the exercise.

The trial brought together ships, aircraft and submarine forces, and Israeli naval units also fired guided missiles.

The exercise tested new weapons in live conditions and gave crews practice coordinating different parts of the navy.

The trials support Greece’s effort to strengthen its maritime strike capability and improve cooperation with Israel.

The firings were acceptance trials, a step toward bringing the new missile systems into operational service with the Greek Navy.
