Polls show no clear winner ahead of New Zealand election

New Zealand is holding a general election on November 7, and polls show no clear winner nine days before voting.

A Radio New Zealand-Reid Research poll put Labour at 30.6%, with the Greens and Opportunity potentially supporting it in government.

A separate 1News-Verian poll put National at 29%, with New Zealand First and ACT potentially backing it.

The polls differ on which parties could govern, and neither gives a settled outcome.

New Zealand’s mixed-member proportional system often leads to coalition governments.

Several overhang seats may be added when parties win more electorate seats than their party vote would normally entitle them to, making the final seat total crucial to which group can form a government.

The election is on Nov.

7, and the polls do not yet show which coalition will have the numbers.
