Avis Charged Toronto Man $5,900 for a Rental-Mileage Error

Avis charged Toronto customer Yuehao Huang about $5,900 after a seven-day rental, on top of his prepaid bill.

Huang had rented a GMC Yukon for a family trip around Montreal, Ottawa and Mont-Tremblant.

Avis said he had driven 28,933 km in one week, an average of about 172 km/h without stopping.

Huang said his phone recorded about 1,400 km during the journey, including walking.

Avis later admitted a data-entry error after media inquiries.

The company said it apologized and issued a mileage refund; Huang had said his initial complaint did not resolve the charge.
