Fuel theft cost Pemex 18.2 billion pesos in first nine months of 2026
Mexico's state oil company, Pemex lost 18.2 billion pesos to fuel theft between January and September 2026.
That was 10% less than in the same period of 2025, though losses rose in the second quarter before falling in the third.
From July to September, losses were 5.2 billion pesos, down 26.6% year over year.
Several pollution measures moved in the opposite direction: Pemex reported higher emissions of carbon dioxide equivalent, methane and sulfur oxides than a year earlier.
It also reported that gas flaring rose 76.6% and the share of gas used in exploration and production fell.
The figures show lower theft losses but worsening environmental indicators; the figures cover the first nine months of 2026 and come from Pemex's third-quarter financial report.
Pemex recorded losses of 18.218 billion pesos from fuel theft between January and September 2026.
The loss was 10% lower than the 20.246 billion pesos reported for the same period in 2025.
From July to September, the company recorded 5.226 billion pesos in losses, down 26.6% year on year.
Losses rose 20% year on year in the second quarter, reaching 9.18 billion pesos.
Pemex’s financial report for the third quarter, published on October 30, also reported increases in several pollution indicators.
