Mexico's Supreme Court cancels planned 2027 election in Villa Juárez

Mexico's Supreme Court invalidated rules for Villa Juárez's first town council election planned for 2027.

Villa Juárez is a newly created municipality in the state of Aguascalientes.

The rules said residents would elect the first town council in 2027, while a provisional council would serve until then.

Election rules must be published at least 90 days before a local election process begins, under Mexico's Constitution.

The decree was published on September 7, 2026, but the local process began on October 9, just 32 days later.

The court said that short gap broke the constitutional deadline, so it struck down the provisions governing the election and the provisional council.

The planned 2027 election of the first town council is canceled; the decision does not invalidate the creation of the municipality itself.
