Wegovy obesity tablets to go on sale in France on 2 November

Wegovy tablets will go on sale in France on 2 November as a new option for treating obesity.

Wegovy is made by Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk and contains semaglutide, a medicine that can reduce appetite and help people lose weight.

The tablets add an alternative to weekly injections, which were already available on prescription.

A month of tablets will cost €169, but France’s public health insurance will not cover them.

Novo Nordisk says about 100,000 people in France use Wegovy, and around 30% would prefer tablets to injections.

Prescriptions require medical advice, and France’s health authority recommends that a specialist in obesity care be consulted.

The company has not applied for reimbursement, while the medicines agency has reported dozens of serious side-effect cases linked to improper use.
