One killed in Jakarta gang clash sparked by social media challenge

Four gangs clashed in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, in the early hours of October 26, leaving one person dead.

The groups involved were Popeye, Batavia, Bonsai and Samudra, and the clash included attacks with sharp weapons and an acid attack.

Police say social media challenges helped trigger the violence, with gang members using posts to encourage people to join.

The groups also livestreamed clashes and shared footage online, reportedly to gain recognition for their gangs.

Police detained 19 people, including 12 minors, and identified three detainees as suspected attackers who beat or stabbed the victim.

Police are still searching for one suspect accused of throwing acid.

The motive was probably for identity, and also to gain recognition, perhaps money from social media live streams.
