Alice Springs Masters Games continue despite storms and power cuts

The Alice Springs Masters Games marked their 40th anniversary with about 1,800 athletes competing in more than 20 sports over a week.

Severe storms brought hail and destructive winds to the town in Australia’s Northern Territory, damaging homes and leaving about 9,000 properties without power.

The weather cancelled Tuesday’s golf and moved a street party indoors, while another storm paused golf for about an hour.

Organisers got swimming events back underway, and competitors kept taking part where conditions allowed.

Residents and competitors joined in clearing fallen trees, showing the community spirit that athletes said helped keep the Games going.

As the Games drew to a close, competitors reflected on a week shaped by both sporting achievements and resilience.
