Luke Evans says he related to his working-class character in ITV drama The Party

Luke Evans plays Martin Gilmour in ITV’s The Party, adapted from Elizabeth Day’s 2017 novel.

Martin is a political journalist at a lavish birthday party for his longtime friend, Conservative MP Ben Fitzmaurice, when a shooting takes place.

A detective questions Martin as secrets from the friends’ past threaten to emerge.

Martin grew up in South Wales in a working-class family and later received a scholarship to private school.

Evans also grew up in South Wales in a religious household, and said he felt out of place when he first moved to London to study.

He said he related to the experience of entering unfamiliar worlds and working to find his place in them.

The drama’s story explores the divide between Martin’s background and Ben’s privileged world.
