Chapecó to reopen some municipal schools after tornado damage

Chapecó will reopen some municipal schools in person on Friday after severe storms and a tornado damaged parts of the city in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Schools that were not affected are expected to resume classes, while some damaged schools will teach remotely as officials inspect and repair buildings.

Other schools will remain without in-person classes on Friday, and some will also be closed on Monday or Tuesday.

The storm damage has affected communities across Santa Catarina, with incidents reported in 120 municipalities.

The state says 5,893 homes were affected, 56 people are homeless, 272 have been displaced and two people have died.

School schedules depend on ongoing safety checks and repairs, with some classes still suspended into next week.
