Egyptian lawyers seek review of TikTok creator’s live-stream gifts
Egyptian creator Mohamed Shaker, known online as “Shaker Mahzour Delwa’ti,” returned to TikTok live streaming after his release from prison in August.
His first live stream drew a large flow of virtual gifts, with estimates circulating that they were worth millions of Egyptian pounds.
Lawyers have asked Egypt’s prosecutor to examine the gifts and their money trail, including their value after TikTok’s fees.
Virtual gifts are bought with real money inside the app and can be converted into creator earnings, so the gifts’ displayed value may differ from the creator’s actual take-home amount.
There is no official figure for Shaker’s earnings from the broadcast.
One complaint also asks authorities to check possible tax evasion and money laundering concerns; these are allegations, not established findings.
The complaints add to calls for clearer rules on creator income and taxes in Egypt, where lawmakers have previously raised the need for regulation.
The authorities’ review and any further legal steps are not yet reported.
Two Egyptian lawyers filed complaints asking the prosecutor general to examine TikTok creator Mohamed Shaker’s live-stream gifts and related income.
