Gotham FC wins its first NWSL Shield as playoffs begin

Gotham FC beat Utah 2-0 to win its first NWSL Shield on the final day of the 2026 regular season.

The Shield goes to the team that finishes first in the NWSL regular-season standings, and Gotham held the top spot for 12 straight weeks.

The victory also gave Gotham a league-best 14th clean sheet this season, meaning it did not concede a goal in 14 matches.

Seattle Reign claimed the eighth and final playoff place, while San Diego Wave finished second despite winning their last match.

The regular season is over, but the NWSL playoffs start Friday, with Gotham set to face Seattle on Sunday.

Gotham are defending league champions after reaching last year's postseason through the final playoff spot, and now enter the playoffs as Shield winners.
