About 1,000 new businesses closed in Puebla in 2026

In the municipality of Puebla, about 1,000 businesses opened in 2026 have closed, according to city economy secretary Jaime Raúl Oropeza Casas.

He said 3,000 new establishments are still operating this year.

The closures were mainly linked to normal business cycles, personal decisions, property sales or owners’ age, he said.

Oropeza Casas said the city has no record of formal closures caused by extortion or sharply rising rents, and knows of no related complaints filed with state prosecutors.

Most of the new businesses are in Puebla’s Historic Center, where the city says permits have been processed more quickly.

The official urged shop owners to report crimes so authorities can investigate and advised them not to answer suspicious calls that may be attempts at telephone extortion.
