CAR army and Russian specialists thwart armed groups’ operation, president says

Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadera says CAR forces and Russian specialists stopped a major operation by armed groups.

He said the action took place on October 10 in the Nabagai-Tissi area of Vakaga Prefecture.

The opposing force numbered about 1,300 and planned an offensive in Vakaga and Bamingui-Bangoran prefectures later in October.

CAR forces launched a preemptive strike against the fighters.

Touadera said more than 60 militants were killed and a significant quantity of Western-made weapons was seized.

Several field commanders were killed or forced to flee, including Mahamat Deya and a commander named Khalid.

The president cautioned that this does not mean the country is definitively stable, and he gave no further details about what happens next.
