Four people die fighting wildfire in Indonesia's Bromo national park
Four people died fighting a wildfire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park on Indonesia’s Java island.
The fire trapped them in flames and thick smoke on October 15; three died at the scene and one later in hospital.
The dead included park staff and security guards helping to fight the blaze.
Two other people were seriously burned, and a volunteer firefighter and a hotel security guard were also receiving medical care.
Indonesia is facing a months-long crisis of fires and toxic smoke, with satellite-detected hotspots rising to 799 nationwide by the evening of October 15, up from 372 the day before.
Hotspots are areas of unusually high temperature and do not always indicate a fire, but the ministry said smoke has made it harder to use aircraft to drop water and to carry out cloud seeding.
Smoke has made conditions unhealthy in some areas, and the ministry advised people to limit time outdoors and wear masks if air quality worsens.
