Brazil approves Capvaxive vaccine for adults against 21 pneumococcal types

Brazil’s health regulator, Anvisa, approved the Capvaxive vaccine in late September.

Made by Merck Sharp & Dohme, it is approved for adults aged 18 and older and protects against 21 types of pneumococcus.

This bacterium can cause illnesses ranging from ear and sinus infections to pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis.

It can spread between people through respiratory droplets, and children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are among those at greater risk.

Anvisa based its decision on six studies involving about 8,400 adults, which assessed the immune response to the vaccine.

There is no date yet for clinic availability or SUS coverage, and a doctor should advise who should receive it and when.
