US elections will shape control of Congress and governorships
Americans voted to renew part of Congress and choose governors in 36 states.
The elections involve Donald Trump and the balance of power in Washington, as they are seen as a test of his political strength.
Voters were choosing who would hold seats in the House and Senate, as well as governorships.
The results will determine which party has a majority in each chamber of Congress.
That balance matters because it will affect Trump’s ability to pass laws for the rest of his term.
The election results will show who controls the House and Senate and which candidates won governorships.
Millions of Americans voted in midterm elections that could change the balance of power in Congress during Donald Trump’s presidency.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats were up for election.
Democrats were favored in polls to win the House, while close Senate races were expected to decide control of that chamber.
Governorships and local offices were also on the ballot.
Voting machine problems delayed voting and counting in some areas, while the Justice Department said it deployed election monitors in all 50 states.
