The Return of the King Trick-Taking Game Set for February 2027

The Return of the King Trick-Taking Game Set for February 2027

A new cooperative card game based on The Return of the King is due in February 2027.

It will complete a trilogy of games adapting J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books, following games based on The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

Players work together with limited information to complete missions drawn from key moments in the story.

Designer Bryan Bornmueller built the games around trick-taking, a card-game format in which players compete to win rounds.

He developed the series to introduce characters and their abilities gradually, making the missions accessible to people who may not know trick-taking games.

The final chapter has moved some playtesters to tears, Bornmueller said.

The trilogy concludes when the new game is released in February 2027.

My proudest achievement with this game is I had multiple playtest groups tell me that they teared up a little bit when they played the last chapter, especially people who have played for a few years together.

My original idea was going to be like the moment when the Fellowship leaves Rivendell,
