AI agents could design a whole aircraft, but independent checks are essential
William Roper, CEO of Istari Digital, says AI agents could design an entire aircraft as soon as next year.
The company builds digital tools for designing complex systems and works with organizations including Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin and the US Air Force.
Roper says AI agents can coordinate many tasks and complete some design work in days that used to take months or years.
But following set procedures does not prove that an AI-designed result is correct.
In an earlier project, Blue Origin used AI to design a battery for the Moon, while people outside the AI system could independently check its data, tests and results.
Roper says engineers will increasingly supervise and verify AI work rather than carry out every design task themselves.
He argues that independent quality checks are needed to catch mistakes and confirm that designs meet safety requirements.

He says independent checks outside the AI system are essential to verify its work.
Roper warns that following procedures does not guarantee an AI-generated result is correct.
He says engineers are likely to shift from carrying out design work to supervising and checking it.
Istari Digital has helped put AI agents and independent controls to work on a Blue Origin battery project for the Moon.
- Who
- William Roper, co-founder and chief executive of Istari Digital, discussed AI agents and independent checks.
- What
- He said AI agents could design an entire aircraft, but their work needs independent verification.
- When
- Roper said this could happen as soon as next year. The interview was published on October 12, 2026.
- Where
- The interview was conducted in connection with the Global SOF European Symposium in Rome.
- Why
- AI can make mistakes, and compliance with procedures does not prove that its work is correct.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
A system cannot be the controller of itself
AI can produce a wrong result while respecting the guard rails
