Fiat Topolino becomes street-legal in the US for 2027

Fiat has made the Topolino legal on US public roads as a low-speed vehicle for the 2027 model year.

The tiny electric vehicle was previously limited to private property because its top speed of 19 mph did not qualify it for that status.

The updated version can reach 25 miles per hour and may be driven on roads with speed limits under 35 mph, depending on local rules.

It is offered in three versions: the standard Topolino, the Dolce Vita and the new Open Air.

All three have a starting price of $14,985 including a destination fee, and Fiat says existing owners can get a free upgrade to low-speed-vehicle status.

The Topolino has a range of 46 miles and 8 horsepower, so it is designed for short trips rather than longer journeys.

Fiat says it is also offering the new Open Air model, while the other two versions remain in the lineup.
