South Korea’s mistaken-transfer recovery service named a world first

South Korea recognized a service for recovering mistaken bank transfers as a world-first government innovation on October 30, 2026.

The service was introduced in July 2021 by the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation, a public institution.

Before it existed, people who sent money to the wrong account often had to pursue complicated legal steps themselves, which could cost time and money.

The corporation now asks recipients to return the money voluntarily and can support recovery through court payment orders when needed.

By the end of July 2026, it had helped recover 18,216 mistaken transfers worth about 22.6 billion won.

The service reduces the burden on people who make transfer mistakes as digital payments become more common.
