Lula meets Brazil’s congressional leaders to discuss legislative priorities

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met congressional leaders Hugo Motta and Davi Alcolumbre at the Alvorada Palace in Brasília.

The meeting lasted about 90 minutes and included talks on legislative priorities as well as a courtesy visit to congratulate Lula on his fourth term.

Motta leads the Chamber of Deputies, and Alcolumbre leads the Senate; both helped secure Lula’s re-election.

The PL party will hold the largest blocs in both houses from February 2027, while Lula’s political federation elected fewer lawmakers.

The article says this will make the new Congress the strongest opposition Lula has faced during his presidencies.

Lula wants to work with Motta and Alcolumbre, and the Workers’ Party is expected to announce in the coming weeks whether it backs their re-election as congressional leaders.

That effort is intended to keep the PL from leading either house.
