Tesla operating profit falls 56% as AI investment rises
Tesla's operating profit fell 56% in the July–September quarter of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.
The US electric-vehicle maker reported $718 million in operating profit.
Lower EV sales and increased spending on AI-related projects contributed to the decline.
That spending is part of Tesla's investment in artificial intelligence.
Free cash flow, the cash left after spending, turned positive after one quarter in the red.
The results show Tesla facing weaker EV sales while putting more money into new technology.
Tesla reported third-quarter operating income of $718 million, down 56% from a year earlier.
The company attributed pressure on profitability to higher spending on AI and other research, lower regulatory credit revenue and weaker energy-storage gross profit.
Revenue was $28.05 billion, slightly below analysts’ estimates, while adjusted earnings per share and free cash flow beat expectations.
Tesla said it had secured $30 billion in borrowing to support expected capital spending, but did not expect to draw on the new facilities this year.
Nikkei also reported that Tesla’s electric-vehicle sales declined in the quarter.
