NC State beats Cal 31-10 in first game after Dave Doeren’s firing

NC State beat Cal 31-10 on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

It was the Wolfpack’s first game under interim coach Todd Goebbel, after the school fired longtime coach Dave Doeren on Oct.

24.

The Wolfpack scored 21 points after halftime and shut out Cal, reversing a season-long struggle in second halves.

Quarterback CJ Bailey threw two touchdown passes, and NC State’s defense held Cal to 269 yards of offense.

The win lifted NC State to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, while Cal fell to 3-6.

NC State needs two wins in its final four games to become bowl eligible for the 12th time in 13 years.

The school has not announced a permanent coaching hire; former quarterback Philip Rivers said there was “nothing imminent” about a return to Raleigh.
