Japanese investment surge brings more work for Indian law firms

Japanese investors are increasing their bets on India, bringing more cross-border deals.

The activity includes investments by MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and the Development Bank of Japan in Indian financial firms and funds.

Japan pledged 10 trillion yen in public and private investment in India over the next decade.

Since August 2025, 120 memorandums of understanding have targeted more than ₹1 trillion in cross-border investment.

Shifting global economic conditions and Japanese companies' reassessment of their exposure to China are helping make India an attractive destination for expansion.

Indian law firms say they are handling more mergers, private equity and venture capital work, and some are adding lawyers or building links with Japanese firms.

Firms expect activity to keep growing, although the sources do not give a specific timetable for future deals.
