VisionQuest Brings Marvel’s Original Human Torch Into MCU Canon
VisionQuest introduces JIM, an early artificial intelligence, in its fourth episode, “Malware.”
The show describes him as the “Synthetic Man,” built by Dr. Phineas Horton, whose name is also mentioned in the episode.
JIM is Marvel’s original Human Torch, an android who catches fire when exposed to oxygen and later learns to control his flames.
He is different from Johnny Storm, the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four.
The character already appeared in the MCU as a humanoid on display at the Stark Expo in Captain America: The First Avenger.
In Marvel Comics, Ultron later used JIM’s body as the basis for the Vision, but the show does not change the MCU explanation that Paul Bettany’s Vision was made using Vibranium and Dr. Helen Cho’s Regeneration Cradle.
The episode gives the old cameo a larger role by connecting it to the MCU’s history, and VisionQuest is streaming on Disney+.
VisionQuest links the MCU’s “Synthetic Man” to Jim Hammond, Marvel Comics’ original Human Torch.
In episode four, the show identifies JIM as the first AI and names Dr. Phineas Horton as his creator.
A copper-colored, flame-covered JIM appears in a VisionQuest promo, played by Paul Bettany.
The character is distinct from Johnny Storm, the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch.
The story connects to a Human Torch figure previously shown in Captain America: The First Avenger.
