Worker dies after being crushed at steel plant in Sarezzo

A 47-year-old contractor died at a steel plant in Sarezzo, in northern Italy's Brescia province.

He was working inside Acciaierie Venete when, according to an initial reconstruction, a heavy vehicle hit the lift basket he was using.

The impact crushed him against the basket's structure, and he died in hospital after being taken for emergency care.

Workplace safety officials and police are investigating how the collision happened and whether safety rules were followed.

The plant's activities were stopped until the following day, and unions planned further talks with management about the incident and workplace safety.

The steel industry association Federacciai postponed its public meeting scheduled for October 26 as a mark of respect.

In a separate incident in Ancona, a 45-year-old construction worker fell from a ladder and was taken to hospital in critical condition.
