France deploys 70,000 security officers for 7 November demonstrations

France is preparing for demonstrations across the country on 7 November, organised by unions, youth groups and some Yellow Vest activists.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 70,000 police and gendarmes will be deployed, continuing the security plan used for recent days of social mobilisation.

He said fewer gatherings had been called by established unions, while some lacked a structured organiser, which he said could increase risks.

Authorities cited online calls for violence, looting and road blockades, as well as threats against police, public buildings and shops.

The security deployment will include armoured vehicles, water cannon, drones and helicopters, with checks on roads, rail routes and at stations.

Similar security measures have been in place for mobilisation days since 24 October, after violence and looting in several cities on 17 October.

The demonstrations are due to take place on Saturday, and authorities say they are ready to respond if violence or looting occurs.
