CBF disputes reports it sidelined officials after Vasco complaints

Palmeiras beat Vasco 1-0 in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinal on Sunday, November 1.

Vasco complained to Brazil’s football confederation, the CBF, about a possible handball penalty that was not given and what it said was inconsistent use of cards.

The club also questioned the VAR team’s failure to recommend a review of the handball and of defender Saldivia’s second yellow card, which led to his dismissal.

Reports differ on whether the CBF sidelined referee Anderson Daronco and VAR official Rodrigo D'Alonso Ferreira: one account says it did after a meeting with Vasco, while another says the confederation denied doing so.

The disputed calls matter because Palmeiras hold a one-goal lead going into the second leg.

The return match is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, at Vasco’s São Januário stadium, where Palmeiras can advance with a draw.

What is VAR doing in football? [...] VAR is there to assist the refereeing team. And there were two crucial incidents where it did not intervene: Saldivia's second yellow card and sending-off, as well as the handball penalty incident involving Barboza and Lescano.
