Spain’s Princess Leonor turns 21 as she prepares for the throne

Spain’s Princess Leonor turned 21 on October 31, 2026.

She is the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and is first in line to the Spanish throne ahead of her younger sister, Infanta Sofía.

Leonor has spent years preparing for her future role, including taking an oath to Spain’s constitution before parliament on her 18th birthday in 2023.

She completed three years of military training across the army, navy and air force, a traditional part of preparing for the monarchy because the monarch is commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

She began a four-year political science degree at Carlos III University in Madrid in September 2026.

She also takes on more public duties, including speaking at awards ceremonies named for the Princess of Asturias and the Princess of Girona.

Her training and public role are preparing her to become queen, though the sources give no timetable for when she may take the throne.
