George Saunders’s book on short stories arrives in Spanish bookstores

George Saunders’s book on short stories is now available in Spanish in Spain, five years after it was first published.

The writer, who teaches creative writing at Syracuse University in New York state, drew on a course he taught intermittently for 20 years.

When the course was discontinued, he gathered and reread his notes, turning them into a book about short-story writing.

The book combines stories with essays analysing them, including work by Russian writers such as Chekhov, Tolstoy, Turgenev and Gogol.

Saunders says storytelling is a basic human need and that readers write to him seeking guidance.

The book became a bestseller and now sells more than when it first appeared, a success Saunders says he does not fully understand.
