Germany plans to correct tobacco tax law’s start date
Germany’s Finance Ministry says a date error appeared in the tobacco tax law published last week.
The law was meant to raise tobacco tax rates from January 1, 2027, but its published wording said the change took effect the next day.
Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil’s ministry plans to send lawmakers a proposed correction and attach it to another bill.
The Bundestag is expected to consider and pass the change quickly, and the Bundesrat could give final approval on November 20.
The ministry says tobacco manufacturers can continue supplying products despite the error.
The correction is not expected to change what smokers pay or what they can buy.

The rates were intended to take effect on January 1, 2027.
The ministry plans to send a proposed correction to the governing parties, which would be attached to the Fiscal Equalization Act.
