Steelers coach Mike McCarthy injures ankle during game against Buccaneers

Steelers coach Mike McCarthy injured his ankle near the end of the first half against the Buccaneers.

He was helped to a medical tent and did not speak to Pittsburgh’s players at halftime.

McCarthy returned to the sideline for the second half and resumed calling the offense’s plays.

The cause and exact timing of the ankle injury were not clear.

Pittsburgh trailed Tampa Bay 13-3 at halftime, after gaining 102 yards and converting one of six third downs.

Tampa Bay’s undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels led the offense, while Baker Mayfield was out with a dislocated thumb.

The Steelers’ first-half mistakes included a pass interception that set up Tampa Bay’s opening field goal.

No further update on McCarthy’s injury was provided.
