Hasto Says Alleged Illegal Spying Rose After 2023 Court Ruling

PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto says alleged illegal spying increased after Indonesia’s Constitutional Court issued a ruling in 2023.

The ruling changed age requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, allowing Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run in the 2024 election.

Hasto says surveillance was used to silence critics of the government led by President Joko Widodo at the time.

He also says he faced pressure after criticizing the 2024 election, including from an envoy of then-police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

Hasto says the alleged spying could be a serious human rights violation and called spying on a president an act of treason; these are his characterizations.

He says the legal process should identify those responsible.

Hasto wants surveillance to require strict legal procedures, including court approval and a prior investigation.
