Spain extends fuel tax cuts and energy support through year-end
Spain’s Congress has approved an energy-support package through December 31.
It includes a tax cut of up to 20 cents per litre on petrol and diesel, with the size of the cut tied to how much fuel prices rise.
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said 82% of petrol stations passed on the full cut within 24 hours of the government approving the measure on September 30.
The support comes as Spain’s consumer inflation reached 4.9% in September, while diesel prices were 34% higher and petrol prices 27% higher than a year earlier.
The government says the tax cut gives drivers direct savings, and competition authorities are monitoring whether stations pass it on rather than keeping it through higher margins.
The CNMC must publish a study of energy distribution and sales markets by November 30, and will also track food prices.
The package is expected to cost about €12 billion through the end of the year and also includes support for gas and other measures.
Spain’s Congress Permanent Deputation has approved an emergency decree extending energy support measures through the end of the year.
The package includes a fuel-tax cut of up to 20 cents per litre for petrol and diesel.
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said 82% of petrol stations had passed on the full tax reduction within 24 hours of the decree’s approval.
The measures also include support for professional diesel, limits on regulated gas-price increases and a freeze on the price of bottled butane until summer 2027.
The government estimates the package will cost about €12 billion through year-end.

What people are saying
24 hours after the decree was approved by the Council of Ministers, 82% of petrol stations had already passed on the full tax reduction to the pump price.
These are, evidently, direct savings for consumers: almost 60%, for example, of the increase in the cost of petrol or 40% in the case of diesel.
