Possible data leak affects 23,918 people in Japan housing program

Japan's transport ministry said personal data may have been exposed through a national housing energy-efficiency program.

The information may relate to 23,918 people, including representatives and staff at 16,950 registered businesses.

It included names, phone numbers and email addresses, but no information about consumers is believed to have leaked.

The program, run with the economy and environment ministries, provides subsidies for energy-saving home improvements.

Hakuhodo, which runs the program's system and administrative office, reported unauthorized access from outside the system.

The company is investigating the cause and the extent of the possible damage.
